Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones, used in jewelry for more than 5,000 years. Its appeal transcends cultures as it has been used all over the world from Egypt to Iran to Tibet. Here in the United States, it is best known as the quintessential stone of the southwest, sacred to the native Zuni and Pueblo peoples of that region. The appearance of the stones is highly variable, with blues that evoke the heavens on a clear June day or the tranquil seas of the Caribbean and copper greens like the Statue of Liberty. Running throughout are unique whorls and speckles that give each piece its own distinct personality, as individual as the people who wear them.
